Quite a few people think that reflexology is just a soothing foot massage but in actual fact it’s an ancient holistic practice that is believed to aid well-being.
The concept behind Reflexology, also known as Zone Therapy, is based on the belief that there are reflexes in our feet, hands and even ears, which connect to different parts of our body. Applying pressure to the particular reflexes on these parts, particularly the feet, is said to stimulate energy flow to the corresponding areas improving circulation, relieving tension and restoring the body’s natural balance.
Reflexology can’t help you diagnose a health problem nor can it cure you of an existing one. What it can provide is stress-relief, body re-balancing and a general feeling of wellbeing. All of which can reduce pain in some sufferers of specific ongoing ailments. It’s important to remember that Reflexology is a complementary therapy and should not be used in place of medical treatment.
Here are some of the health problems Reflexology can help with:
Your first consultation with the Reflexologist will last for approximately 90 minutes. Your practitioner will ask you questions about your lifestyle, medical history and general health. It’s very important to discuss all your medical conditions with your Reflexologist before treatment begins as there are some conditions that are ‘not’ suitable for Reflexology.
Once your Reflexologist has all your details you will commence treatment. You’ll be asked remove your shoes and socks and sit in a reclining chair . Your therapist will first examine your feet and make sure they are sufficiently warmed up before proceeding with treatment. Gentle yet firm pressure is then applied to your foot at pressure points with his/her fingers and thumbs, areas of soreness or tension are duly noted and worked on. Some Reflexologists may use lotions during treatment.
At the end of your treatment you should feel relaxed. Your Reflexologist will finish with a foot massage and discuss details of what he/she has picked-up during the session.
If you are intersted in Reflexology and want to find out more there are Books and DVDs available.
